spiderman 2

Talk about hitting it big! “Spider-Man 2” sure did in just 24 hours of its launch — the game sold a whopping 2.5 million copies. Yep — you read it right. Even the mighty “God of War, Ragnarok” had to step down from its number one spot.

To put things in perspective, the previous installment in the Spider-Man franchise, released in 2018, reached an impressive 3.3 million unit sales in three days, outshining “God of War’s” previous record of 3.1 million during the same time frame.

However, “God of War Ragnarok” later reclaimed its position as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game, boasting 5.1 million sales in just a week.

However, what makes the SP2 win sweet is the game being a PlayStation 5 exclusive. With a smaller audience than their cross-gen counterparts (Ragnarok was launched on both PS4 and PS5), Spider-Man 2 has shown that it can hoist a trophy of its own. That said, Sony’s high hopes for this fascinating sequel are not just about breaking individual game records. They’re also about the grander aim of pushing console sales, especially with an ambitious target of 25 million PS5s looming large.

For those familiar with the game, you know it’s not the first Spider-Man venture by Insomniac Games; it’s the third installment, and it did not disappoint.

It’s tricky making a sequel that lives up to expectations, but Insomniac Games has swung it just right. They’ve made sure to use every last bit of the PS5’s bells and whistles to the game’s advantage.

It’s got everything — a mesmerizing storyline, a stunningly detailed New York City, and a captivating dual-hero system — because why should you stick to one when you can have double the fun? Also, giving us the chance to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales is a genius move, weaving in two distinctly contrasting narratives that play off each other beautifully.

Delving more into the game, a new city-wide crisis finds its way into the lives of our heroes, as Kraven the Hunter plans to release multiple supervillains just to hunt them down. Amidst this chaos, the sinister alien symbiote, Venom, lies in wait at unexpected times, adding another layer of tension to the already thrilling plot.

Fans can once again experience the thrill of taking on notorious villains and their minions, wielding a variety of web-slinging and physical attacks for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. With every move, players become more entrenched in the superhero action as they lift enemies with webs, land powerful attacks, and harness energy for additional abilities.

What’s more, as the game advances, players rack up XP points and tokens which they can use to amp up their skill sets and tweak their suits. It’s that perfect mix of challenging but rewarding, keeping you hooked for that next level or upgrade.

Apart from the jaw-dropping action sequences, the game also shines a spotlight on the quieter, more human moments of the characters. There’s Peter, grappling with adulting, and Miles dealing with his father’s death and his own insecurities. These details ground the story in reality, making you connect with it on a deeper level.

Spider-Man 2 has its share of glitches, however, like some wonky boss battles and a not-so-perfect user interface at times. Still, these are minor gripes in an otherwise well-executed action game that sticks to its roots. It’s got a heartfelt story, plenty of conflict, and all the web-slinging action you could ask for.

Gameplay mechanics aside, SP2’s reviews are also glowing. It boasts a commendable score of 91 on Metacritic, further proving its high-quality production. However, critics point out the enlarged yet unimproved open world of New York City, with a laissez-faire checklist of largely monotonous side activities. Perhaps a future DLC or a prospective Venom spin-off might provide the necessary breath of fresh air.

To wrap it up, if you’ve got a PS5, then consider getting Spider-Man 2. It’s an incredible blend of adrenaline-filled adventure with a strong dash of emotion and drama. This game has raised the bar for superhero games, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it also helps lift PlayStation 5’s sales charts higher.
