cold war guns

Competitive multiplayer games have always focused on who could gain the strongest possible advantage over their opponent in the shortest amount of time.

For first-person shooter games, that tends to revolve around utilizing the best weapons in the best situations and forcing your opponents into engaging on your terms.

With games like Call of Duty where everyone has similar weapon choices available to them eventually.

The most viable choices often wind up limited once people begin to figure out the metagame as early as the alpha and beta testing phases, as seen in numerous games in a variety of genres.

Here is a look at the best guns in Black Ops: Cold War and tips for when they should be used!

Assault Rifles and Mid Range Weapons

Let us start with the most standard and common brand of gun — the assault rifle. Assault Rifles are great in just about every single game in the Call of Duty franchise.

They can be used up close and personal, and, if you’re skilled enough, at distances that would make even the most talented sniper blush.

They tend to be the “every man’s gun” in that their versatility is where their true power lies.

For instance, in Call of Duty: Black Ops, it is widely believed that the Krig 6 leads the assault rifle pack for that reason: versatility.

It is effective in nearly any situation, and its effectiveness is rather indicative of the skill of the player rather than the strength of the weapon.

However, the Krig 6 is not the only viable AR. The Famas, a long time favorite in the Call of Duty series, is very much a formidable alternative.

The XM4 is the first AR a player can use and it’s one of the most balanced weapons in the game.

Like always, the AK 47 makes an appearance but this AK has a lot of firepower and after a few add-ons, it becomes one of the most precise guns in the game.

Shotguns, SMGs, and Up Close and Personal Weaponry

There is almost always one reason to utilize a shotgun over a different weapon type in first-person shooters, and that is the ability to kill your enemy in one shot without the precision required of sniper rifles.

Some of the more popular shotguns in Black Ops include the Gallo SA12 and the SPAS, which can be equipped with a silencer.

Both are equally effective provided you aren’t firing at your enemy from long distances or running around in open areas.

As for submachine guns, the MP5 continues to be a go-to and the fan-favorite AK 74u makes a comeback. For super close combat, the Milano SMG packs a punch but lacks mid-range power.

Sniper and Tactical Rifles

The Pelington 703 is arguably the most powerful long-range weapon in the game.

Though a certain distance is required for all but the most proficient players to be effective, the Pelington 703 will kill almost any opponent in one or two shots.

There are several modifications that can be added to each weapon as well, and the mods for this gun in particular make it even deadlier than usual.

The perennial, almost always balanced M-16 makes its umpteenth appearance in this game.

It utilizes burst fire and seems to be at its most effective at mid-range distances.

Playing to the gun’s strengths with modifications, as opposed to try and develop a one size fits all weapon, makes this weapon a force to be reckoned with when in the right hands.
