Fortnite has taken the world by storm since it was released on July 25, 2017, and has, in the time since, become one of the most popular video games in history.

In it, players attempt to stay alive for as long as possible while using any tools or weapons that they can procure to help them do so. What makes that task especially challenging are all of the zombie-like creatures that have infiltrated that gaming world.

However, participants now have an additional weapon that they can use.

J.J. Abrams, the director of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is being released just before Christmas 2019, recently showed off an addition to Fortnite, the availability of lightsabers.

That’s not the only Star Wars-related addition to the game as the list of unlockable items now includes a Jedi training emote.

Abrams did this in connection with showing a new clip from his expected blockbuster movie. What made that clip premier so interesting was where it was shown, at Risky Reels, Fortnite’s virtual drive-in theater. That promotional event concluded with a lightsaber duel.

Prior to that moment, an avatar that looked quite similar to Abrams was engaged with the Fortnite world. That character later left in a spaceship.

Leading up to this moment, Fortnite players had repeatedly come across Star Wars-related advertising as posters had been started to be placed at locations throughout the Fortnite world.

There ended up being so much interest at the time of the event that it was moved back 10 minutes to allow as many players into it as possible.

This moment, however, was not the first time something like this has happened within the Fortnite world. Marshmello performed in a live concert in that virtual world on Feb. 2, 2019.

The audience then was estimated to number about 11 million, and that figure doesn’t include those who watched a live stream of it on Twitch and similar platforms.

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” marks the end of the Skywalker saga and maybe the final Star Wars movie to ever be released, coming more than 42 years after the original “Star Wars” came out.

Abrams has said that he hopes that Star Wars fans will be “satisfied” by this conclusion to the iconic storyline.
