Oculus VR struck a deal with the Chinese electronics giant Lenovo to help it speed up manufacturing and to improve the original Rift.
New ‘Oculus Rift S’ Features
This led to the next-generation Rift headset the Rift S.The new VR device that is more comfortable, sports 2560 x 1440 resolution, and features the same inside-out tracking system that will ship on Oculus’ upcoming standalone Quest headset.
Every existing and future game on the Rift platform will be playable on the Rift S. The company is also enabling cross-buy and cross-play features. That way, you upgrade to a Rift S from the Quest or original Rift and still have your entire library.
There has been no releases date for the Rift S yet, but Oculus stated shipping will start in spring and will arrive in-store around the same time.
Next-Gen Advanced VR Headset, ‘Oculus Rift S’
In regards to the design, the Rift S features a new halo-style strap, which Sony used for its PlayStation VR headset. The halo strap makes for a more comfortable fit, and it allows you to dial the device forward and backward using a knob at the rear of the band. The top strap is there to make it snug on your head, while a slider underneath the right side of the headset is used to bring the physical lenses closer or farther from your eyes.
As for the original Oculus Rift, it is currently out of stock just about everywhere except Oculus own site. This pretty much means the Rift is being phased out.
The Oculus Rift S is going for $399.99 and will begin shipping before summer.
