work from home tips

The coronavirus outbreak has most people working from home. If you’re new to working remotely, these tips will help keep you productive!

Many people are working from home during the COVID-19 crisis. Working from home is, by its definition, much more relaxed than an office environment.

Still, you want to do your best not to distract your colleagues. To that end, you should set up your workplace with a neutral background like a blank wall or hanging sheet.

You should also mute yourself when you’re not talking so that any background noise doesn’t disturb the people on the other end of your video feed.

You should be dressed. That doesn’t mean iron your shirt and wear a suit.

In fact, you can probably get away with wearing pajama pants or shorts.

Normally, anyone on the other end of a video call won’t see you below the waist.

Wear a nice polo shirt and make sure your hair is brushed and, if you’re male, that you’re freshly shaven. If you have facial hair, shave around it and make sure what you do have is neatly trimmed.

You should also create a set schedule for work hours the same as you had in the office.

Having structure is important so that you have some sense of a normal routine. It also sets a good example for your colleagues.

Anyone in your home, such as roommates, spouses, children, mothers-in-law, etc., should respect your working hours and not interrupt you.

Take breaks and have meals just as you would in the office. Save contact with people in your space for those times.

Whenever you can, during your lunch break, get outside the home for a brisk walk, some quiet time in the sun, or something else relaxing, like playing with a pet.

You’re also going to need certain materials and equipment at home to be successful while working.

Never hesitate to ask your employer for everything you need to be productive.

After all, your productivity is crucial for the success of the company.

Finally, keep being social. Ask your co-workers about their days, their families, and other things that you would have asked them standing around the water cooler.

Stay home, and be safe!
