best pizza in nyc

Getting a real New York slice means visiting some of the most iconic pizzerias in the city.

You’ll find a great pizza in all five boroughs of the city – but these five locations are top-notch and highly recommended!

1. Nunzio’s Pizzeria & Restaurant

Nunzio’s is a Staten Island staple and has been since the 1940s.

It serves up Neapolitan-style slices, square pieces, and yes, even thick pies.

Not the pizza type? Nunzio’s offers salads, heroes, and pasta, too.

2. Zero Otto Nove

Zero Otto Nove offers one of the best wood-fired pizzas to be found in the city.

Neapolitan-style pizza is the main attraction here.

For those who want to try something different, the eggplant parm is excellent, too.

3. Sal & Carmine’s Pizza

Another old-school pizzeria, Sal & Carmine’s has been serving New Yorkers slices since 1959.

The tomato sauce is perfect – not too thick or sweet. The cheese blend adheres to the crust better, too – no runaway curds here.

For those who want an authentic New York slice, Sal & Carmine’s is the place.

4. Lombardi’s Coal Oven Pizza

Lombardi’s is the oldest pizzeria serving up coal oven-cooked pies in the city.

It is often called the first pizzeria in NYC, making it a popular tourist destination.

There are other coal oven pizzerias in the city that serve up delicious pies, but none of them are as famous as Lombardi’s.

5. John’s of Bleecker Street

John’s of Bleecker Street was founded by an alum of Lombardi’s in 1929.

It’s one of the best places to get a coal-oven fired pizza in NYC.

One thing to note though – pizzas here are sold by the pie only. While you can snag a single slice at most NYC pizzerias, that’s not true at John’s.

6. Arturo’s

Want an authentic New York slice straight out of the 1900s? Head to Arturo’s for a great Neapolitan-style pizza at a location that’s off the beaten path.

Arturo’s has been around since 1957 but hasn’t achieved the same level of pizza-fame as Lombardi’s or John’s.

7. Rubirosa

Rubirosa serves up what the pizzeria dubbed the “tie-dye” pizza, featuring a swirl of pesto.

The unique creations attract a crowd, though, so be prepared for a long wait.

8. Roberta’s Pizza

Roberta’s pizzeria offers arguably the best take on the traditional Neapolitan-style pizza.

The pizzeria cures their own meats and only uses locally grown vegetables for its pies.

You’re in for a wait since each pie is oven-fired, but you won’t find a better Neapolitan pizza.

9. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

Do you love thin-crust pizzas? Grimaldi’s has been serving up coal oven-fired thin-crust pizzas since 1991.

That’s relatively new as it goes for pizzerias, but it’s still worth checking out.

Ownership of Grimaldi’s in Manhattan has changed hands a few times over the years – no family story here.

10. Lucali

Looking for the cozy, neighborhood feel of a pizzeria not swamped with tourists?

Lucali might be just the place. The pizzeria’s signature is a thin-crust pizza featuring a three-cheese blend.

The menu here is dead simple – calzones and pies only.
