Can Canon Keep Up With Sony Mirrorless Cameras

For years professional mirrorless cameras have been a trademark of Sony. Canon has finally decided to join the mirrorless revolution! EOS R is a full-frame entry into the future of slimmer, more powerful cameras.

Canon isn’t completely new to the mirrorless game, they released the M line, which had a smaller APS-C sensor, but the EOS R is its first with a full frame, 30-megapixel CMOS sensor. Having a professional full-frame mirrorless camera to compliment Canons quality of glass can be a major disrupter in the mirrorless race. One of the most interesting changes is image stabilization. Sony has always had image stabilization integrated into the camera, but Canon decided to build stabilization into the lenses themselves.

New is great but Canon decided to not reinvent the wheel; they will still use the same batteries as most of Canon’s DSLR cameras, and it has a very similar button layout to them.

As great as this sounds, Canon still cannot compete with the video abilities of Sony cameras. The EOS R has a 1.8x crop in 4K, is limited to HD when shooting 120p, and there’s a lag when triggering the record button. Enthusiasts want it all in the pro cameras; from still photos, low-light capabilities and crisp clean video. It hard to see anyone running to give up their Sony for a Canon, but we are rooting for Canon to make a comeback to a place they once dominated!
